Saharan Dust Triggers Allergy and Sinus Symptoms in the Rio Grande Valley
Dust in the air is not uncommon in our region, especially during the dry summer months. This summer, however, has brought unusually dense plumes of dust to the Rio Grande Valley, all the way from the Sahara desert in northern Africa. This phenomenon, known as African Dust, Saharan Dust, or the Saharan Air Layer, can cause problems for people who suffer from allergies, asthma and chronic sinus conditions.
The dust can make the skies appear hazy and cause the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to issue warnings about air quality in south Texas and other areas throughout the state. Those who are sensitive to changes in air quality might find themselves suffering from the same symptoms they would expect during allergy season, days with a high pollen count, smog and other environmental changes.
